A/C Cold While Driving, Warm at Idle — Causes & Fixes

A/C Cold While Driving, Warm at Idle — Causes & Fixes | Crown Auto Service 417

A/C Cold While Driving, Warm at Idle — Causes & Fixes

Most common causes

  • Weak or inoperative condenser fans → poor heat rejection at stoplights.
  • Dirty/clogged condenser or radiator stack restricting airflow.
  • Refrigerant charge incorrect (low or overfilled) → wrong pressures.
  • Expansion valve/orifice tube issues → poor metering at idle.
  • Compressor wear → marginal output at low RPM.

How we test it

  1. Check condenser fan command & amperage; verify both speeds (if equipped).
  2. Measure high/low side pressures and vent temps at idle vs. 1,500–2,000 RPM.
  3. Inspect condenser fins and debris; wash as needed.
  4. Verify correct refrigerant charge with recovery & weighed recharge.
  5. Evaluate metering device and compressor efficiency.

Quick fixes you can try

  • Clear leaves/bugs from condenser face (gentle water, not high-pressure).
  • Watch that cooling fans start with A/C ON; if not, service is needed.
